Elegance and harmony characterise the Azay-le-Rideau castle, built on an island in the middle of the Indre. Surrounded by vast landscaped gardens, the lacy chiselled stone details of the Renaissance façades are reflected and magnified by the water. The castle was described by Balzac as a "faceted diamond set in the Indre". The main staircase is a masterpiece in itself, and the 16th and 17th century tapestries are remarkable.
